National Communication Officer – Dar es Salaam – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

General Description of task (s) and Objectives to be achieved

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative and the guidance of Assistant FAO representative (programme), working in close collaboration with the various programme officers, and with regular consultation and coordination of the Regional Communication and information outputs. Specifically the incumbent will.

• Research and draft media and advocacy materials; create/prepare documents for publications in journals, position papers, op eds, speeches and talking points.
• Collect and synthesize information and package; including production, editing of human interest stories, press releases, web stories.
• Edit texts of a specialized or technical nature in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with FAO; house-style language, policy and practice.
• Respond to a variety of inquires and information requests internally and externally; prepare related correspondence.
• Track, research and analyze information on assigned topics/issues; gather information from diverse sources and helps synthesize briefs.
• Lead editorial review of FAO Tanzania public information documents, public materials (including the website), presentations, newsletters, for public review.
• Develop a social media strategy for FAO Tanzania, and conceptualize, design, plan, formulate and manage the Office`s social media presence-in line with Corporate guidelines.
• Provide advice to project managers and senior officers on the strategic use of media tools (including social media) to strengthen FAOs Agriculture and food security leadership and advocacy role.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Competencies and Requirements
• University degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent work experience in the field of communication combined with university degree in related discipline.
• A minimum of 5 years of progressive responsible experience in public information/communication in the area of agriculture or related field.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili for various audiences knowledge of another UN official language will be an asset.
• Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively.
• Experience in drafting/editing a variety of UN public information documents/products.
• Ability to work efficiently in a team while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Expected Outputs and Required Completion Date
• FAO Tanzania Communication Strategy – to be finalized within first 2 months of commencement of duties.
• Quarterly Communication plan developed and implemented – Every Quarter.
• Weekly events listing for dissemination and circulation within FAO TZ and to FAO sub-regional, regional communication offices and headquarters.
• Report on communication products developed for increased visibility of FAO under implementation of the communication strategy – bi monthly.

Duty Station: Dar es salaam (with frequent travel to the field) and occasional travel to other FAO offices.

Duration: 11 Months
